C. Danny Fletcher, age 90 of Warren, died Thursday, October 29, 2020 at home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born June 14, 1930 in Detroit, son of the late Harry Foley and the late Ina Maxine (nee: Craig) Hadfield.
With thanks and praise from a grateful nation, we honor Danny for his service to our country as a patriot & member of our esteemed United States Marine Corps, serving from 1947 thru 1950.
1950 not only brought Danny’s return home from the Marines, but it was also a very special year as it marks the occasion of his marriage to the love of his life, Virginia. Exchanging their vows at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Detroit, it was the beginning of a loving relationship that would span over 69 wonderful years as husband & wife. Together they welcomed 5 beautiful children into their happy home, and grew deeper in love with each passing day.
Danny was a well-rounded kind of guy, as reflected in the various career positions that populated his resume. Beginning as a tool & die maker for the Potvin-Kellering facility, Danny’s precision and attention to detail were well-suited for this line of work, and his expertise was well regarded. Following that was the time he spent as owner & proprietor of the Donut Castle in Warren, a favorite hangout for many in the community, and an oasis for many of Warren’s finest over the years. That would take him to the point of retirement,…but as with many guys out there, that dreaded “R” word just didn’t fit into Danny’s MO. It wouldn’t be long before he would find his “post-retirement niche” with the Detroit Tigers’ organization where he served in a security & protective mode, the Sentinel at the Kiosk that guarded entry into the building and its employees. He loved the position, the people, and the wonderful opportunity he was given to be a representative for the iconic Detroit sports team. This post-retirement gig would last for the next 22 years, a testament to this hard working man.
Sports wasn’t merely a part of Danny’s work resume, it was also a huge aspect of the pastimes that filled his life when he was away from work. Like many guys who covet their sporting pleasures, Danny was truly a lover of all the “Sports in the D”, especially when it came to his beloved Tigers and Lions. Watching sports was a favorite activity that he visited often. And not merely catching it on the television, Danny also enjoyed being a participator as well, as witnessed in his love of snow skiing. Whether it was downhill at Boyne Mountain or cross-country at Hanson Hills, strapping on those skis and bounding through the snow was both exhilarating and enjoyable for Danny.
Another of his pastime enjoyment was found in reading. Danny was an avid reader, especially when it came to an enticing mystery or a work of historic fiction. When he was seeking a bit of solitude, nothing fit the bill quite like curling up with a good book and pouring through the pages. And as much as he liked to read his stories, Danny was also known as one who could share a great story as well. Regaling others with his humor and knowledge came easy for him, and the joy it brought others’ hearts was immense, too.
Yet of all the things he held precious, the biggest part of Danny’s heart was filled with the souls of his dear family who were his greatest gifts in life,…especially those coveted grandchildren of his. From the many family gatherings, adventures, to hangin’ out in the bleachers for his children’s & grandchildren’s sporting events,…Danny was their biggest fan, loudest cheerleader, and most profound supporter of all.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, Danny leaves a legacy of love that is sure to be a constant reminder of how deeply he adored those most precious to him. He touched a multitude of hearts and souls in his journey through life, and influenced everybody towards the better part of kindness and caring for one another. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.
Danny was the beloved husband of Virginia. Dearest father of Colleen (Dan) Lewendowski, Shannon (Merle) Warner, Daniel (Jean) Fletcher, David (Becky) Fletcher, and Stacey (Kim) Renas. Loving grandfather of Nick, David, George, Erin, Mark, Ryan, Ginny, Molly, Trey, Harrison, Casey, Quin, and great-grandfather of Austin.
Private Family Services were held for Danny on Saturday, October 31, 2020.
