Edward Novak, age 88 of Clinton Township, died Sunday, May 8, 2016 at home. He was born January 18, 1928 in Warren, son of the late Henry and the late Annie (nee: Edwards) Novak. With thanks and praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Edward for his service to our country during World War II. As a soldier in the U.S. Army, he was part of the 511th Airborne Signal Company,…and yes, he jumped out of planes,…of course, with a parachute strapped to his back. At the young age of 18, not long out of high school, Edward was about to receive an entirely different kind of education,…the kind that changes your life forever. Suited up and ready to defend the freedoms of our country, and that of our allies as well, he was transferred to Japan where he would serve out the lion's share of his military service. He answered the call to duty with bravery and patriotism, and served valiantly amidst the many faces of war. Renowned for being part of the Greatest Generation, we extend our posthumous gratitude for his willingness to stand in harm's way for our liberties,…and for those around the world.Employed by the City of Warren for many years as an automotive mechanic, Edward found great reward in his work and immense satisfaction in knowing that Warren's Finest could navigate the city's roads and neighborhoods in cruiser's they could count on. He worked primarily with Police Department vehicles, and ultimately earned the position of Foreman amongst his team of mechanics. He worked hard to earn his place, and always arrived home knowing that he'd given it his best. And after a long day on the job, there was no better treat than one of his favorites,…a Gin Martini. Whether unwinding from a busy day at work, or simply enjoying time away from responsibilities, one of his Gin Martini's was like sipping from the "Nectar of the Gods." Drawing from his military service and the fraternal kinship shared with his fellow soldiers, Edward managed to revisit similar ties when he became a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and built some wonderful friendships within the organization over the years. From their many meetings, gatherings and social events, Edward truly enjoyed the whole enchilada and made quite an impact with his stand-out sense of humor. Known affectionately as a "Joker,"…he loved making people laugh and kept them in stitches quite often. He was truly the life of the party. And for as much as he was funny, he was also quite sentimental as well. Perhaps one of Hallmark's greatest customers and supporters, Edward was a Greeting Card King! He loved extending cards for special occasions, and did so well into his golden years and amidst his residency at Pine Ridge. While there, he made sure that every birthday was celebrated,…and it would often begin with the sounds of the cow bell and horn that he used to announce each special recipient. Then, of course, came the greeting card,…and hearts would swoon. So,…as if humor and sentimentality weren't enough, Edward touched a multitude of hearts and souls through his Eucharistic Ministry at St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren. At a time for many who were suffering and hurting, Edward's company and compassion made a world of difference. He truly possessed the heart of a servant and emanated a special sense of God's love and hope,…a gift that was a blessing to countless lives throughout his life's journey.A loving husband, father and grandfather, Edward leaves behind a legacy of love for all to cherish with each reflection shared. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.Edward was the beloved husband of the late Katie and Dottie. Dear father of Edward A. (Linda), Robert (Connie), Dan (Eileen), Sandy (Pete) Leinhase, the late Cathy, the late Donna, and the late Steve Claeys.
