

Frederick Elbert Schoen, of Michigan, passed away on April 15, 2026, at the age of 88. He leaves behind a legacy of service, education, and lifelong dedication to his country, his profession, and his family.
Born on August 20, 1937, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, Frederick lived a life defined by intellectual curiosity and commitment to others. He proudly served in the United States Army, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His distinguished military career included service in the Army Reserve as a Major in Military Intelligence. He was a graduate of the Military Intelligence Officer Advanced Course and the Command and General Staff College.
Frederick’s passion for education shaped much of his life’s work. He earned a PhD in Instructional Technology and devoted his career to teaching and developing innovative educational programs. He taught United States history, political science, and instructional technology at the college level, as well as in Detroit Public Schools and the Detroit College of Business. A pioneer in educational broadcasting, he taught over 100 televised U.S. history lessons and wrote and produced several documentary radio series, sharing his love of history with a wide audience.
A man of faith, Frederick was a devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church in Fraser, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ladene Schoen (2022); his parents, Frederick Schoen and Alma Schoen (Peairson); and his brother-in-law, Leon Sowell and Leon’s wife, Ernita Sowell.
He is survived by his brother-in-law, Duane (Linda) Schachinger; his nephew, Scott (Nicole) Schachinger, and their children, Molly, Natalie, and Kaylee; his niece, Karyn Wakely, and her children, Hayleigh, Alyvia, and Dylan; his nephew, Brian (Keli) Sowell, and their children, Madyson, Abigail, and Cooper; his niece, Brenda (Andy) Bommarito, and their children, Jordan, Isiah, and Brooklyn; along with many extended family members, former students, colleagues, and friends who will deeply miss him.
Frederick will be remembered for his intellect, his service to his country, his dedication to education, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
Visitation Friday, April 17th from 4pm until 8pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr Road, in Warren. Frederick will lie instate Saturday, April 18th at St. John Lutheran Church, 16339 E 14 Mile Rd, Fraser, MI 48026 from 9:30 am until time of Funeral Service at 10am. Frederick will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan on Monday, April 27th at 12:30pm.
