George Austin Hill, age 91, died Saturday, November 9, 2019 at Ascension St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren, Michigan. George was born June 19, 1928 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, son of the late Austin Parker Hill and the late Georgina (nee: Flynn) Hill.
He was raised in Canada and was quite a good athlete excelling at baseball. George was even recruited by the Cincinnati Reds Organization to play baseball,...however, his military call to duty came first and would redirect his life.
George served in the United States Army during the Korean War from January 8, 1951 until his honorable discharge on December 30, 1952, attaining the rank of Corporal in the Military Police. While in the military, one of his jobs was to guard prisoners of war. However George was able to enjoy himself while playing baseball for the Army.
With thanks and praise from a grateful nation, George returned home from the military and married in Toronto to his bride, June M. Hill. The young couple eventually settled in Michigan, until George and June decided to move to St. Petersburg, Florida. While in Florida George found a job as a firefighter from 1961 until 1963. The couple eventually decided to return to Michigan where George found employment working in local machine shops.
George and June lived in Detroit until moving to Warren, Michigan in 1998. When George was not working he enjoyed his family trips up north to Oscoda and Hubbard Lake, along with traveling to the Smokey Mountains and back to Florida with his wife. When George was younger he was an avid hunter and fisherman, who also liked to golf with his buddies. He also had an artistic side where he would spend hours oil painting or creating jewelry out of coral.
As time marched on George spent quiet time watching sports on television or going to his grandchildren's sporting events. He was a caring man who cared deeply for his family and friends, and will be forever missed.
George Hill was the beloved husband of the late June M. Hill, and was the dear father of Douglas (Dianna) Hill, Gregory Hill, and Gordon (Tracy) Hill. Additionally Mr. Hill was the cherished grandfather of Benjamin, Christopher, and Chelsea.
