Jim served his country with honor and carried the pride of his Air Force days with him throughout his life, often sharing stories of his time in uniform with a sparkle in his eye. His patriotism was unwavering, and he took great pride in being part of something greater than himself.
Beyond his military service, Jim was a man of many talents and passions. He had a deep love for country western music—especially the sounds of Johnny Cash—and could often be found strumming his guitar to familiar tunes that brought comfort and joy to those around him. A regular at his local lottery counter, Jim played the lotto daily, never losing his hopeful spirit.
A skilled woodworker, Jim found peace and satisfaction in crafting beautiful garden pieces—wishing wells, bridges, and more—each one made with care and precision. He also enjoyed challenging himself with crossword puzzles.
Known as the go-to mechanic for his grandchildren, Jim never hesitated to get under the hood and fix what needed fixing, always teaching as he went. But some of his fondest memories were made at Cracker Barrel, where he and his beloved wife were regulars. The two would sit and enjoy sweet tea, laughter, and each other’s company—simple moments that meant the world.
Jim is the beloved husband of 63 years to Rose Ballew. Loving father of Karen (David) Bolam, Pat McDonough, and Kathy (Jim) Whidden. Cherished grandfather of Julie, Cliff (Theresa), Kevin (Mallory), Kim (Dennis), Amanda (Roy), and Emily. Treasured great grandfather of Logan, Lucas, Cayden, Evy, Hailey, Roy, Lily, Abby and Alex. Dearest great great grandfather of Aubriyana and Emerlee.
A memorial visitation for Jim will be held Friday, June 13, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr Road, Warren, Michigan 48088, followed by a memorial service at 6:00 PM.
