Michael James Grieshaber, age 75 of Sterling Heights, died Thursday, May 19, 2011 at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Macomb Center in Warren. He was born in Detroit on August 25, 1935, the son of the late Marvin B. and the late Margaret (nee: Lynch) Grieshaber. With thanks & praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Mr. Grieshaber for his service to our country during the Korean War era. As a member of the United States Army, we honor his service and sacrifices made which afford us the freedoms & liberties we enjoy today because he was there. Mr. Grieshaber was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Detroit. From there, he attended University of Detroit Mercy where he attained his Bachelor's Degree. With his sights set even higher, he would continue his education which culminated in a Master's Degree from Michigan State University. With an impressive portfolio of degrees under his belt, Mr. Grieshaber's job searching ultimately led him to the Budd Company in Detroit where he worked in the Accounting Department. This was a perfect fit as he possessed a magical affinity with numbers. He was like a walking calculator. He found great enjoyment in his work, and there he would remain loyal and steadfast. After 40 years of dedicated service, Mr. Grieshaber bid farewell to the job and entered the realm of the retired. Mr. Grieshaber was a strong man of faith with a true servant's heart, which is what led him to become involved with the Knights of Columbus. Electing to join the Knights of Columbus Council #3042 in Eastpointe, he spent many years with the order in faithful servanthood which included; being a member of the 4th Degree, serving as a past Grand Knight, and holding the office of District Deputy. He was most proud of his association with this esteemed, fraternal brotherhood of men,...and quite frankly, looked quite handsome bedecked in his K o C regalia. When he wasn't working, Mr. Grieshaber enjoyed a host of favorite pastimes. In his earlier years, he so enjoyed getting back to nature in the family's outdoor camping trips. When it came to a little sports recreation, you'd often find him at the bowling alley rolling his way through the fun and comaraderie. He was quite skilled at the sport, but just always got the most enjoyment in sharing it with others. If not at the alley's, you might have found him enjoying a sunny day on the golf course giving his clubs a go. He not only enjoyed playing the game, but also played an integral role in setting up many golf outings and orchestrating various fundraising efforts in support of the sport. Another one of Mr. Grieshaber's passions included something "fowl." He loved Ducks! He was an avid collector,...both of the ornamental kind, and the one's he bagged while on his duck hunting ventures. Much like the outdoorsy trait he possessed for camping, there was something unique and challenging in the marksmanship and competitive world of duck hunting,...which he excelled at as well. He also loved to drive, and was affectionately known as the "human GPS." He knew his way around like the back of his hand. All you needed to do was provide him an exit number and your traveling woes were solved. Perhaps this trait came from the fact that he loved to travel. One of his favorite places to visit was Las Vegas, but there was always a special passion set aside for his residence in Lake Worth, Florida. While in Florida, a special treat he experienced was catching the Detroit Tiger's at their spring training camp. But there's no question, for all of the things he enjoyed, nothing came close to the passion he held for his family,...especially his grandchildren. They were the apple of his eye and, together, they created many warm and treasured moments. Mr. Grieshaber leaves behind a legacy of love that will forever keep him in the hearts & minds of all the people he touched along life's way. He will truly be missed. He was the beloved husband of Mary. Dear father of Barbara (Jason) Bojan, Anne (Michael) Kozel, and Susan (James) Talmage. Loving grandfather of Abigail, Jack, Brooke, and Noah. Brother of Marvin (Alice) Grieshaber, Peggy (Gene) Kelty, Mary Claire Smith, Donna (the late John) Gray, Lou (Cathy) Grieshaber, Madelyn Harris, and Marc (Judy) Grieshaber. Visitation for Mr. Grieshaber will be held on Monday, May 23rd from 3:00pm to 9:00pm, with a 7pm Rosary Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Rd) in Warren. He will lie in state on Tuesday from 9:00am until the time of Mass at 9:30am at St. Blase Catholic Church, 14151 Fifteen Mile Road in Sterling Heights. Officiating the liturgy will be Rev. Fr. Randall Phillips. Memorial donations are welcomed to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, 1820 Mt. Elliott Avenue, Detroit, MI 48207. Please share memories of Mr. Grieshaber at his guest book.
