Quincy Mims, 86, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2006 at Fraser Villa in Fraser, Michigan. Quincy Devon Justice was born June 16, 1919 in Pikeville, Kentucky, to T. F. and Ollie (Maynard) Justice, the sixth of nine children living at the family farm on Grassy Creek. She attended Pikeville High School for one year before completing her high school education at the Christian Normal Institute in Grayson, Kentucky in 1936. Quincy married Bernard Newton Mims on May 28, 1942; they resided in Colorado Springs during World War II. After their son Randall was born in 1946, they returned to Pikeville. Bernard taught at Pikeville High school and became its Principal; Quincy worked in the Pikeville County Clerk's office and the Pike County Employment Office as a social worker. The family moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1956, where Bernard taught and served as Science Department head at Northern High School. Quincy worked in the china department of J. L. Hudson. In 1977, she won an employee contest and earned an all-expenses paid trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, courtesy of the Royal Doulton Company. Both Bernard and Quincy were long-time members of Bethany Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on Cadieux Road, and served their church family. Quincy enjoyed cooking and baking, with specialties ranging from crispy chicken, jello salads, fried apples, lemon icebox pie, strawberry rhubarb pie, pistachio cake and strawberry meringue cake. She loved flowers, especially roses. Houseplants especially thrived under her green thumb. Quincy dedicated extra time caring for her husband during his long bout with emphysema and lung cancer before his death in 1984. She retired from J. L. Hudson in 1986, shortly before her only grandchild, Amanda, was born. Despite her battle with Parkinson's disease, Quincy enjoyed sharing family memories and stories.
