Robert George Laws, age 63 of Warren, died Friday, January 16, 2015 at St. John Hospital in Detroit in the company of his loving daughters. He was born January 14, 1952 in Detroit, son of the late William and the late Marie (nee: Griesbeck) Laws. There are, potentially, many words or phrases that could describe and define Robert,…but without question, one of the most prominent would be "hard working." For many years, his was the smiling face that many customers came to know and love along his routes as a UPS delivery driver. He would eventually retire from UPS after extending the utmost in loyalty and dedication to a job that he loved. He retired, like many, with dreams of enjoying that laid back lifestyle without a care in the world. Well, that slice of nirvana didn't last very long before Robert realized just how important "being busy" was to his life,…so back to work he went. This time, it was with the Macomb County Community College system where he worked as a Receiving Agent at their South Campus in Warren. Finally, his journey within the working world reached its destiny,…and retirement became quite attractive. Retired, though he was, didn't necessarily mean that he was lying on the couch watching TV and eating potato chips all day long. Actually, it gave him more time to enjoy things like caring for his flower and vegetable gardens, dabbling with projects in his woodworking shop, and playing the role of Handyman,…especially at his daughter Becky's place where he became quite the fixture when something needed to be repaired. So even though he wasn't punching the time clock, his second round of retirement provided the perfect mix of work and personal enjoyment which proved to be very rewarding,…not too busy, not too idle. When he wasn't working, Robert enjoyed an eclectic array of pastimes,…some sporty, some cerebral, and some just for fun. Like many Michiganders, hunting season always called his name. He so enjoyed the outdoors, especially when he was on the hunt for the biggest stag he could find. And still in the sporting realm, but in an entirely different direction came his love of golfing and bowling,…two venues which provided Robert immense entertainment over the years as shared with the host of wonderful friends he had come to know throughout his life. His bowling memories were made even more special as it is something which both he and his wife shared together in the many leagues they participated in. Robert was also known for his love of swimming, a sport that found its roots in his earlier school days and simply followed him through adulthood. If he found himself near a body of water, chances were good that he'd probably soon be in it. From his non-sporty proclivities came his love of playing computer games. This was a special pastime for Robert as it almost always included some fun & bonding time with his son-in-law's. Nothing says macho & entertaining like a bit of gaming competition on the computer. Another special pastime was found in his love of camping, but certainly not in tents. Hooking up the trailer and heading to new and exciting places brought out the "Clark Griswold" in him. Fortunately, there weren't any similar disasters,…just a lot of fun memories of being outdoors and sharing some great times with all the fellow campers he met. In October of 2012, Robert's beloved Carol went home to be with the Lord, which found him back into the life as a single man. But little did he know that his single days were once again to become counted. It was six months ago that another special lady would enter his life and renew his heart of passion, his new fiancé, Cathy. Had it not been for his passing, Robert & Cathy would have become husband & wife in a wedding that was planned for February of this year. So it is that Robert was blessed to have shared love twice in his life, a true gift indeed.A loving husband, fiancé, father and grandfather, Robert leaves behind a host of special memories and moments shared with those he cared for and loved,…especially the special times shared with his sweet grandchildren. His journey through life found him walking the path with many different people, many with whom he shared something unique and genuine,…reflections for all to share who were blessed to have known Robert and be touched by him. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally. Robert was the beloved husband of the late Carol (nee: Nowc), and fiancé of Cathy Canaan. Dear father of Jennifer (Casimir) Zalewski, Rebecca (Robert) Culver, and Katie (Jonathan) Boulter. Loving grandfather of Casey, Aiden, Addison, Bobby, Kayla, and Cale. Brother of Kathy (Charles) Piscopink and John (Darlene) Laws. Visitation for Robert will be held on Friday, January 23rd from 3-9pm, with a 7 pm Rosary Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Road) in Warren. He will lie in state on Saturday at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores from 9:30am until time of the Funeral Mass at 10:00am. Memorial donations are welcomed to the Karmanos Cancer Institute, 4100 John R Street, Detroit, MI 48201. Please share memories of Robert at his memory book above.
