Robert Dale Nickerson, age 69 of Warren, died Monday, October 31, 2016 at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Macomb Center in Warren. He was born November 8, 1946 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Robert was preceded in death by his loving parents, Edgar and Mary Swayze, and his treasured parents by marriage, Gaetano and Irene Dorazio. With thanks and praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Robert for his service to our country during the Vietnam War era. As a sailor in the U.S. Navy, Robert ultimately attained the rank of Yeoman 3rd Class and served most of his tour abroad. Upon entering his military service, his first assignment was carried out at the Pentagon where he was trained and assisted with numerous clerical and supply needs for the war effort. From there, Robert was transferred overseas and assigned duties in the Da Nang region of Vietnam where his training was put to work in processing supply needs, as well as handling the delivery of mail. The family reflects on the many stories he told of navigating the waterways in his mail boat,…no gun for protection, only the will and determination to see that the mail made it through. We honor Robert for his sacrifices made and his willingness to stand in harm's way for freedom's sake. For his bravery displayed and the call to duty answered so proudly, we extend our posthumous gratitude.Upon his return stateside, Robert proceeded down the path of sales and built a resume that was rife with experiences and achievements that spoke to his strengths and abilities in dealing with his many clients. From General Dynamics to his latest stint at Production Tool & Supply in Warren, Robert's sales prowess influenced many along the way. But of the many places he worked, it was Racine Hydraulics in Redford that would ultimately be the crowning experience,…for it is there that he would meet the gal who would sweep him off his feet, the young & pretty Angeline Dorazio. After a period of courtship and getting to know each other, the two lovebirds shared their vows and were married in 1975 at St. Scholastica Catholic Church in Detroit. Like many men, Robert possessed a love of sports,…an appreciation that began in his childhood when he was an avid participant in Little League baseball. And though it was somewhat a departure from the norm, he also loved taking part in the Soap Box Derby's that he and his Dad entered. From there to adulthood, Robert's sporting pleasures went from that of participating to the calmer venue of watching them at home on the television. He also had an appreciation for music, especially any time it involved the smooth & seductive sounds of the iconic Elvis Presley! Nobody could hold a candle to Elvis, a singer he never grew tired of hearing. And of the many songs he enjoyed, there's no question that his favorite was definitely "How Great Thou Art." Many have sung the noted hymn, as did his boy, Elvis. Yet of all the joys he treasured the most, spending time with family and friends was always at the top of his list. No matter the occasion or draw, he simply reveled in each moment shared in their company,…especially when it included firing up the Ol' BBQ. It's been said that you're happiest when you're eating,…and Robert was one, happy man! Sittin' around the table, engaged in a little conversation, and lickin' your fingers from eatin' something tasty off the BBQ,…now THAT was a Good Time for Robert.A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Robert leaves us far too soon in the scheme of things, but not without leaving a part of himself through the many memories that were created in the precious moments shared. His love was genuine,…his care was immense,…and his legacy will forever be cherished with each remembrance embraced. He will be missed immeasurably. Robert was the beloved husband of Angeline. Dearest father of Jeffrey Nickerson and Gregory (Chelsea) Nickerson. Loving grandfather of Austin, and brother of Glen (Chris), Sharon (David), the late Rudy Johanson, and the late Richard Nickerson. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Donna Johanson.Visitation for Robert will be held Thursday, November 3rd from 3-9 pm at the D.S.
