Shirley Bernice Marek

Shirley Bernice Marek, age 85, died Monday, January 26, 2015 at home surrounded by her family. Shirley was born August 5, 1929 in Toledo, Ohio, daughter of the late Omer McDaniel and the late Odela (nee: Renn) McDaniel.Shirley was raised in several states including Indiana and Ohio before settling in Michigan where she attained employment as a Registered Nurse.Shirley met her husband Anthony while working at Holy Cross Hospital in Detroit. The two would later marry and move to Warren, Michigan to raise their young family. Shirley worked as a Registered Nurse for over 30 years with Holy Cross Hospital before retiring.Shirley was devoted to her Catholic faith and to her home parish at St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Warren. In addition to working, Shirley was a wonderful homemaker who could cook and can foods. She loved her garden and flowers and was also a very skilled seamstress. Quiet time at home was spent listening to classical music and piano.When it was time to have some fun, Shirley could often be found at the casino plying her ways with ole' lady luck. She and her late husband took many fun trips to the casinos in Las Vegas. Shirley cherished her family, grandchildren, and great-grandson. However, when she had an opinion she was going to give it to you straight...Shirley never held back nor pulled any punches.Mrs. Marek was the beloved wife of the late Anthony Marek, and is the dear mother of Anthony (Carolyn) Marek, Ellen (Phil) Skender, and the late Suzanne Marek. She was also the loving grandmother of Anthony Marek, Sara Skender (Kenneth Marcoux), Anna Marek, and great-grandmother of Kenneth. Memorial donations are appreciated to the Capuchin Fathers, 1820 Mt. Elliot St., Detroit, MI 48207. Arrangements were entrusted to the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home in Warren, Michigan.
