William Hamilton Sunday, Sr., age 90, died Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at his home in Warren surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Scarborough, West Virginia on September 5, 1923 to the late Andrew Sunday and the late Myrtle (nee: Stewart) Sunday. At the young age of 23, William decided to leave the comfortable and familiar surroundings of his native West Virginia and headed north to Michigan. It was in 1946 that he moved to Detroit to begin his new life. A year later, in September of 1947, he married his sweetheart, Helen, and the two would go on to raise three beautiful children and nurture the comforts of home and hearth.Like many of those who moved north to Michigan in the post-WWII era, William's employment was sought within the automotive industry. With a history that included the Rinshed-Mason Company, Ford Motor Company and the Dupont Paint Plant, he was a man who possessed those old-fashioned and time-worn hard work ethics as he extended the best of himself in each field of expertise he knew. When he wasn't working, William enjoyed a number of different pastimes. Perhaps the one he will be most noted for is the splendor and beauty that he poured his heart into through the nurturing of his prize-winning rose garden. He was an avid gardener, and his roses were a thing to behold. So much so that he was the proud recipient of Warren's Beautification Award,...not once, but twice! For those who were lucky enough to partake of William's 64 bushes floral excellence, they'll be able to attest to and forever reflect upon what an incredible example of tender-loving-care he extended in the artistry with roses. For Kathryn, Linda and William Jr., their memories will forever be rife with how much their Dad made summertime so special. Every summer, the kids grew to anticipate the joy of the trips to the Detroit Zoo, Greenfield Village, and the Armada Fair. But the real fun came in the first 2 weeks of July when the family made their annual trek to William's native state of West Virginia. It was always a welcomed reunion with family and friends for William,...and truly a blast for the kids as well. Known more affectionately to many as "The Boss," they'll remember just how much William enjoyed going out to eat. They'll also remember what a handy man he was,...especially when it came to helping the kids paint their houses.Yet, perhaps most treasured will be the memories of how he was good to his family and held them in the highest regard. He was a hard man who possessed a soft inside, and there was never a question of his abiding love. To think of how he cared for his delicate roses,...just imagine how much more he felt for his loving family. He lived a long and rewarding life that was filled with numerous gifts, but none-so-much as the gift of family. The legacy of love he leaves will forever be a beacon and guidepost with each reflection that is felt and shared. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.William was the beloved husband of Helen. Dear father of Kathryn Davis, Linda (Thomas) Marquardt, and William (Michele) Sunday Jr. Loving grandfather of Aaron Davis, Rachel (John) Santoro, Nathan Davis, Selena Sunday, Jared (Andrea) Kappeli and Olivia Sunday. Great grandfather of Scott, Corinna Santoro, and Davion Ellison. Brother of Jack (the late Aileen), Sylvia (the late Oren) Starks, Carol (Elliott) Marcus, and Charlotte (Fred) Land, and the late Joseph, Donnie, Elanor (the late Bill) Woods, and Ruth (the late Kyle) Allen. His visitation will be held on Friday, November 8th from 3-9pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile) in Warren.
