Adrienne Metil, known professionally as Adrienne Mitchell to millions of radio listeners around the country, died November 24, 2019 at the Washington Hospital Center after a nearly year-long battle with endometrial cancer. During her four decades in radio, Adrienne entertained and informed listeners under several names for a range of radio stations, including a five-year stint in the Washington, D.C. market from 2002 to 2007 as an anchor on WTOP. At the time of her death, Adrienne was a business reporter with Bloomberg Radio and was heard on many radio stations around the country, including weekday afternoons on KNX, Los Angeles.
When she was not in a radio studio, Adrienne was an avid cook and traveler. In 1999, she and her husband, Andy, took what amounted to a mid-life sabbatical and spent several months over the course of two years traveling the U.S. by car. In their travels over the years, they visited 49 states (never having made it to Alaska) and all 30 active Major League Baseball ballparks (plus several stadiums that have since been retired, as well as numerous spring training facilities and minor-league parks).
Adrienne was both a gourmet and gourmand. She and her husband loved to eat at restaurants everywhere they traveled. Then, once home, Adrienne would frequently replicate, and improve upon, the dishes they had enjoyed. In recent years Adrienne also became much appreciated for the Irish soda bread that she would serve at the annual St. Patricks Day party at her home.
Adrienne is survived by her husband, Andrew Metil; mother, Patricia O'Keeffe; brother, John O'Keeffe; and sister-in-law Mary Grove and her husband, William. She will also be particularly missed by her husband's cousins and their families in Switzerland.
Her remains have been interred in the All Souls Memorial Garden on the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral. As the memorial garden is open to the public, those who knew and loved Adrienne will be able to visit with her at any time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Planned Parenthood.
