
On Monday, June 16, 2025, Catherine Maureen “Mo” (Gaine) McGowan passed peacefully while surrounded by family. Beloved wife and mother, she is preceded in death by her husband, Paul John McGowan, who passed away on February 22, 2014. Maureen is survived by her six children, Michael McGowan (Jody), Maura Gordy (Sam), Kathleen McGowan, Ellen McGowan, Brendan McGowan (Meredith) and Ann Redgate (Chris) and her 12 wonderful grandchildren, Brendan, James and Colin Gordy, Courtney and Cailtin Katz, Norah and Henry Redgate, Mary Claire and Will McGowan and Elle, Charlie and Patrick McGowan.
Maureen is survived by her sister, Sister Virginia Gaine of Bryn Mawr, PA and her sister-in-law, Marybeth Gaine of Waterford, VA.
Maureen is preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth, her sisters Margaret, Elizabeth Keegan (Rob), Joan Hutchison (Robert), Patricia Magovern and her two brothers, John (Tish) and Patrick.
Born in Bradley Beach, NJ on April 12, 1941, the sixth of eight children, she was raised in Chevy Chase, MD and graduated from Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School and Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart. After graduating college, she taught second grade at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, MD before raising her family.
Maureen’s passions included cooking, knitting, crossword puzzles, playing bridge, athletics and spending time with family. She was a culinary genius, impressing family, friends and neighbors with incredible gourmet aromas as they entered her home. Whether making her famous meatballs, pies and cookies, the kitchen was her happy place. Maureen was also an accomplished athlete. She played field hockey and basketball in both high school and college and was an avid golfer later in life. She had the Gaine math brain and tutored Algebra students at Little Flower, along with neighbors and friends. Maureen was happiest spending time at the Jersey Shore with her husband, children and grandchildren.
Family and friends may call at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 5949 Western Avenue, NW Washington, DC on June 18, 2025 from 12 pm until the start of Mass of Christian Burial at 1 pm. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org in memory of Maureen McGowan.
