
Dorothy Grune Carroll, Senate Office Manager and Washingtonian Volunteer, died on the tenth of August, 2015 at the age of ninety-two. She was a resident of the Village of Drummond, Chevy Chase, Maryland. In 1977 Mrs. Carroll joined the staff of the late Representative Jonathan Bingham (D-NY) until his retirement in 1983, when she became Office Manager for Senator Carl Levin (D-MI). For the following nine years Mrs. Carroll was a volunteer at the U.S. Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites.
Mrs. Carroll was born in Hilo, Hawaii, and was raised in Honolulu where she attended elementary and secondary schools. In 1940 she entered the University of Washington, Seattle, where she was a member of Delta Gamma. Following the outbreak of World War II she returned to Honolulu and became deeply involved in the war effort. She joined the Women’s Air Raid Defense (WARD), a civilian service under the Hawaiian Department, U.S. Army, which monitored all air traffic throughout the central Pacific, working in a cave at Fort Shafter on Oahu. As a Red Cross volunteer, she worked at Hickam Air Force Base and at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel which had been converted to an R and R unit for the U.S. Submarine Force.
Prior to her marriage in 1953 to Architect M. Elliott Carroll, FAIA, Mrs. Carroll was a Senior Agent for United Airlines in their Honolulu sales office.
She was a member of the Junior League of Washington
Her husband, M. Elliott Carroll, died in 2004. The Carroll’s had three children, Jane Dudley Carroll of Silver Spring, MD, Marshall Elliott Carroll, Jr., of Bakersfield, CA and Frederick G. Carroll (deceased 2001), two granddaughters, Cynthia Jane Carroll of Cincinnati, OH, and Sandra Elizabeth Carroll of Bakersfield, and two great-grandchildren, Tara and Nicholas. Also surviving is her brother, Murray C. Grune of Honolulu.
A service will be held at All Saints Church, 3 Chevy Chase Circle, Chevy Chase, MD on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. with a reception following at the Carroll home.
