Dorothy Graeves Weber died peacefully at Brighton Gardens Friendship Heights in Chevy Chase Maryland on June 27, 2016 after a short battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was 99 years old. Dorothy, known as Dottie, was born in Washington, DC on February 26, 1917 to Lewis and Josephine Graeves. Due to her mother's tuberculosis the family moved to Saranac Lake, New York where she lived from a young age until she graduated with a BA in Drama from Elmira College in 1938. The family returned to Washington, DC where Dorothy worked as a secretary for the Federal Government. There she met and married Donald Richard Weber who had grown up in Omaha, Nebraska. They were married on June 24, 1939. Several years later her widowed mother-in-law came to live with them. For the next 20 years, Dottie lovingly cared for her mother-in-law. Dottie and Don had a son, Bill and a daughter, Tina. Dottie was a devoted wife and mother. When her own mother died at the young age of 60, Dottie and her children spent their summers with her father at a summer home near Annapolis, Maryland. Dottie was involved in volunteer activities in her church and in the community. Some of her activities were devoted to her beloved Episcopal Church and the Ki-wives charities. She also raised money for the Florence Crittenden Home and Ivymount School. She was an avid reader and a master at crossword puzzles. Walking was a favorite pastime. When her six grandchildren and then 14 great grandchildren were born she became their beloved Granny. Almost everyone of these offspring knew her and dearly loved her. Even at the age of 94 she was still playing hide and go seek with them. She was known for her sweetness, graciousness to all, and her impeccable taste. Many people described her as the nicest person they have ever met. Her husband Donald preceded her in death. Dottie is survived by her son William (Karin), her daughter Tina Manatos (Andy), her grandchildren: Mike (Laura) Manatos, Nick (Des) Manatos, Clayton (Kathleen) Weber, Joanna (Mike) Reiger, Tom (Dana) Manatos, George Manatos and her fourteen great grand children. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Brighton Gardens Friendship Heights for their love and caring of Dottie over the last four years.
The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday June 30, 2016 at Joseph Gawler's Sons 5130 Wisconsin Avenue NW Washington DC.
