Eudora Laurinda Richardson

Eudora Laurinda (Dora) Richardson passed away at her home in Georgetown, Washington DC on January 21, 2021. A longtime resident of Georgetown, she made her home there a frequent setting for family, friends and members of the Georgetown University community to which she was devoted.

A loyal and generous supporter of the University, Dora served on its Board of Trustees and founded the current Richardson American Studies Lecture Series. She earned an Undergraduate Degree from the University in American Studies and each year opened her home to host the Georgetown American Studies annual reception. Her earlier education included the Foxcroft

School in Virginia and Bennett College in Millbrook, New York.

Before settling in Washington, she traveled widely and lived abroad with her then-husband, Ambassador James G. Lowenstein in Ceylon and Yugoslavia as his postings were then known. He survives as do their children Laurinda Lowenstein Douglas of New York

and Price G. Lowenstein of Bermuda as well as her grandchildren, Jake, Haley and

Alex. Two sisters, Molly Smith of Elkin, North Carolina and Margaret White of Middleburg, Virginia also survive.

Dora was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on August 9, 1931 to Lunsford Richardson,

Chairman of the Board of the Vick Chemical Company, later

Richardson-Vicks, Inc. and Margaret Blakeney Richardson.

She was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut and Greensboro, North Carolina.

Beyond her support of Georgetown University, Dora was also active on other corporate and philanthropic boards, notably the Hillsdale Fund on which she served for over 60 years. Her summer home in Seal Harbor, Maine, “Immensee” was a source of great pleasure for her and the setting for a constant, lively flow of family and friends in the summers there during which time she also maintained an active presence in the local philanthropic community.

She was a talented tennis player and lifelong devotee of the sport.
