Well, damn. Dr. Harold Herman was my professor at University of Maryland, and I was very saddened to hear of his death in January of 2017. I am equally saddened to hear of the death of his long-time partner, Mr. Mays, in December of the same year. I wish I'd known him better; we met once or twice, that I recall. Dr. Herman was a wonderful man, and therefore, Mr. Mays must also have been a wonderful man. Both are missed.

Never had the opportunity to meet The Harold’s, their story found its way to my Facebook page. I was uplifted and proud to know they loved each other and built a wonderful life together, and had great friends. I’m almost a mirror of them, same type of marriage, comfortable life, race backlash and still we survive and press on. Had I known these two men, I would’ve made a B Line to their business and sat in the company of legends basking in their struggles and accomplishments. I will meet you on the other side. Thank you for being a good guy, and great man. Love wins. Mychaeltodd Robinson-Hokerk

What a blessing to have known and been a friend with Harold Mays (and his partner, Harold Herman) through the 1980s and early 1990s. I met Harold M. at a book signing in DC and our friendship took off around book collecting and author signings. It was a friendly competition and Harold and I had some wonderful trips in and outside DC. Harold was a sweet, kind soul and I will always remember our times 'on the hunt' together.
