
Ian Sinclair McDonald, son of Mr. Iverach McDonald and Gwendolyn Brown was born in London, England during World War II, He, among other children, was evacuated to Wales; U.K. He passed away July 15th at the age of 87.
He went to boarding school at Kings School in Canterbury, and as a young scholar, to New College Oxford to take a degree in Modern History.
For his military service, he was with the Seaforth Highlanders and after his military service joined the Glasgow Herald as an editorial writer.
He was among 12 outstanding journalists from European publishing institutions to be awarded the World Press Institute’s invitation to visit U.S news publishing houses.
He joined the United Nations headquarters in New York City after the U.S tour and was in the Human Development Division of the U.N when he was called by the management of the Times of London to be the Washington correspondent.
He covered President Kennedy’s funeral, the presidential elections, the inauguration, and the space landing program from Cape Canaveral.
He was later informed by the Times of London that his next assignment was Moscow, when a call from the International Monetary Fund came to offer him a position in the External Relations Department. He was so delighted to accept the offer and he became the Chief Editor of the External Relations Division.
A touching tribute to him was expressed to his wife, Crispina, by the Managing Director of the IMF, M.Jacques d’Larosiere, as "the most calm and reasonable man I have worked with”.!
An evening visitation for Ian will be held Friday, July 25, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Joseph Gawler's Sons, LLC, 5130 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016.
