Passed away peacefully at his home in Washington, DC on Saturday, September 24, 2016 after a struggle with a lung condition. Born February 20, 1930 in Kyoto, Japan. Son of Dr. Kikugoro Nishimura and Fujie Suzuki Nishimura. Survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Virginia Nishimura. Preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dr. Jiro Nishimura. He is also survived by two sons and a daughter, Dr. Michael I. Nishimura (wife: Kathryn) of Chicago, IL, Brenda K. Nishimura of Washington, DC and James J. Nishimura of Indianapolis, IN; as well as grandson, Edward N. Sincyr of Washington, DC.; a sister, Kikuko Aoyama of Manassas, VA; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He came to the U.S. in 1952 to attend Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. After completing his Bachelor's degree in Political Science in 1955, he came to Washington to pursue a Master's degree in International Studies at Georgetown University. In 1957, he began an exciting career as a contract escort interpreter working in the State Department. Cultural Exchange Program with participants from Japan. He became very proficient at interpreting and translating for groups from many fields, especially international labor affairs and automotive glass manufacturing.
In 1958 he met the love of his life, Virginia May Schmitt from Akron, Ohio. They married and lived in Akron for a few months but settled in Washington, DC on July 4, 1959. They worked hard, raised their family and travelled at home and abroad whenever the opportunity arose.
In keeping with Mike's wishes, any service and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Hospice of Washington, DC, 3720 Upton Street, NW, Washington, DC 20016.
