Passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 with her children at her side. She would have been 99 years old on November 2, 2011. She grew up in Roland Park in Baltimore, Maryland with her parents, Howard Maximillan Plitt and Marye Mays Plitt. She graduated from Friends School of Baltimore in 1930 and Hollins College in 1934. She pursued her love of music at the Peabody Conservatory School of Music in Baltimore.
Jane Mays Plitt married George Warren Offutt, III in 1936. They had two daughters, Mary Jane and Peggy Ann, with whom they lived in Washington, DC, as well as Bellevue and Canterbury Farms in Warrenton, VA. They began spending winters at their home on Jupiter Island, Florida in 1959 and moved their permanently in 1971. After George Offutt passed away in 1986, Jane married John Whitney Richmond of Jupiter Island and Newport, RI in 1988. John Richmond passed away in 1989.
Jane was a dedicated member of the Warrenton Hunt, having duly earned her buttons, and a member of both the Warrenton Garden Club and the Sulgrave Club of Washington, DC. On Jupiter Island, she was an active member of the Christ Memorial Chapel, serving on the Vestry and Altar Guild for many years. She was a Past President of the Jupiter Island Garden Club and was honored with Honorary Membership in recognition of her years of service. She was also a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America and the Halpatiokee Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a lifetime member of the Army Navy Country Club of Arlington, VA and was a devoted member of the Republican party. Jane played bridge and golf with her friends and family well into her nineties.
Jane will be remembered by her five grandchildren and her eight great-grandchildren for her strength of character and spirit - a great Southern lady and a passionate Miami Dolphins fan. She is also survived, and will be greatly missed, by her daughters Mary Jane Offutt Leitch of Bethesda, MD and Peggy Offutt Dillard of Palm Beach, FL.
Services will be held for the family this week in Washington DC, with a memorial service planned for Thanksgiving weekend on Jupiter Island, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Christ Memorial Chapel, PO Box 582, Hobe Sound, FL 33475; the Jupiter Island Medical Clinic, 100 Estrada Square, Hobe Sound, FL 33455; or the Republican National Committee.
