

On Monday, October 1, 2012 peacefully passed away under the amazing care of the Rockville Nursing Home staff, following weeks of visits by friends and family. She coura¬geously battled a decade with COPD.
Loving mother of Richard (Sherry), Suzi Burka Walsh and Jimmy. Beloved grandmother of Katie (Mike) McGuiness, Renee Walsh, Ian Burka, Brett Burka, Tina Walsh and Perri Burka. A native Washingtonian who grad¬uated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1950 and the University of Maryland, Joan was a highly accomplished, passion¬ate and acclaimed cook who won awards at L’academie De Cuisine. She was both a Master Gardener and a member of the Potomac Herb Society Friends and family had a place of great importance in Joan's life. She considered devoted friends one of life's greatest gifts, and each one as a beautiful flower in her Garden of Life.
Although she will be deeply missed, Joan will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of her family and friends and the gardens she attended. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 7, 11:30 a.m. at Joseph Gawler's Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Ave., NW. Immediately following the service family will be receiving friends at the residence of Joan Burka. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Lung Association or the Potomac Herb Society.
