We will hold a celebration of Marilyn’s life on Sunday, April 7, at 9:00 am. (Note the early hour.) The location is Adat Shalom Synagogue at 7727 Persimmon Tree Lane, Bethesda, MD 20817.
Marilyn Elaine Ehrlich was born in Brooklyn in 1929, the daughter of Abraham Ehrlich, a pharmacist, and Irene Ehrlich, a milliner. She attended Franklin K. Lane High School, where she excelled in foreign languages and was captain of the girl’s basketball team. She received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and history from Brooklyn College, and pursued graduate studies in sociology at Columbia University on scholarship.
In 1954, she married Ernest Mayerfeld, a foreign service officer. After moving to Washington, she accompanied her husband on diplomatic assignments to Munich, Brussels, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Zurich, and Helsinki. She worked for a marketing firm in Washington, an engineering company in Brussels, and the US Census Bureau.
The family returned to the Washington area permanently in 1971, settling in Carderock Springs, Maryland. Marilyn discovered a talent for art, with a specialty in landscapes and urban street scenes. After her husband died in 2001, she became more involved in community activities. For several years, she led the “Women of Carderock” association, organizing monthly lunches and introducing neighbors to some of the area’s lesser known museums and historic sites.
She is survived by her daughter Diane Mayerfeld of Madison, Wisconsin; her son Jamie Mayerfeld of Seattle, Washington; and two grandchildren, Samuel Bell and Eleanor Mayerfeld.
