

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Mary grew up outside Minneapolis and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in special education. She taught 4th and 5th grades for over forty years in a career that took her from Minnesota to the Chicago suburbs, to New Orleans, and finally to Washington, where she retired from St. Albans School in 2007.
A lifelong lover of theater and music, Mary performed in community theater and co-wrote musical adaptations of well-known children’s literature for elementary schools.
She is predeceased by her husband of fifty years, G. David Hardman, and brother David Elliott Johnstone. Survivors include her two daughters, Jennifer (Woody) Turner of Chevy Chase, Maryland and Elizabeth (Adam) Schneiberg of Sausalito, California; grandchildren Madeleine (Jordan) Cottle, Harry Turner, Henry Schneiberg, and Annabel Schneiberg; brother D. Bruce Johnstone; sister-in-law Katina Johnstone; sister-in-law Susan Hardman; sister-in-law Missi (Fred) Missad; and nine nieces and nephews.
A memorial service at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church is planned for the Fall. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in memory of Mary Hardman to WETA or to St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, 4201 Albemarle St., NW, Washington, DC 20016.
