I met Oliver Sockwell when I joined FotoCraft Camera Club in 1978. FotoCraft, by the way, is the oldest African American camera club in the Washington DC area. I was told by another long time member (102 year old, John H. Pinkard, Jr.) that Oliver was the first official treasurer of the club (est in 1937.) Pinkard told me that Oliver was a thrifty man. In 1940, when the club wanted to raise its dues from $2.50 to $5.00/per yr, Oliver raised strong objections - he thought it outrageous (smile). How fortunate for our club to have had this man as a supportive member over many years.  I personally remember his kindness and knowledge about the craft of photography when I joined the group in 1978.

I worked wth Oliver's son, Oliver Jr., at Sallie Mae and very much enjoyed and greatly benefitted from the association.  My condolences to Oliver Jr. and his family upon the death of Oliver Sr.

Please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss. "Sock" we are very sorry to hear of the death of your Dad. We are sure that he was very proud of you and he had every reason to be so.  May God be with you at this difficult time.

I am so sorry for your loss Oliver.  I am glad that Marcus was able to know your dad and that he was able to be an inspirational part of his life.  As you know, my Mom at age 90,  expressed an interest in your Dad site unseen.  She must have seen it in your genes.  Again, my condolences.
