Sue Ellen Myers died peacefully on the morning of December 15, 2025, from a recurrence of ovarian cancer. Sue was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and a longtime resident of Columbia, South Carolina.
Sue grew up the youngest of the four Geiger sisters in Gretna, Louisiana. She attended St. Mary’s Dominican High School and College in New Orleans and received masters degrees from Indiana University and the University of South Carolina.
Sue raised her three daughters, Malia, Dawn, and Jenny to love reading (3 English majors!), to appreciate nature, to give back to their communities, and to enjoy a strong cup of coffee. She delighted in her granddaughters Madeleine and Frances, cheering them on at their games, attending their school events, and spending quiet time just being together.
Sue served her community as a social worker for nearly forty years. First as an individual, marriage and family therapist, then as the director of an elderly day care program, and finally as a hospice social worker. She found joy in the opportunity to serve others in this way.
Sue had a deep and abiding Catholic faith and was an active member of her faith community. She was a longtime parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church where she served, at one time or another, as a eucharistic minister, a lector, a catechist, a rosary maker, and participated in numerous prayer groups and faith circles.
In her final weeks, we discussed what she might like included in her obituary and she said that she would like to use it to say thank you to her family, to her friends, to her colleagues, to her neighbors, and to each of you that made her life so rich and full. So on behalf of our Mom: Thank You.
Sue is preceded in death by her daughter Malia Myers and her sister Gwen Watson. She is survived by her daughters Dawn O’Connell and Jenny Chandler; son-in-law Ben O’Connell; granddaughters Madeleine and Frances O’Connell; sisters Jan Honore and Cheryl Geiger; brother-in-law Tom Honore; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral mass will be said on December 29, 2025 at 11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Bethesda, Maryland, followed by burial near Malia at the Holy Cross Abbey natural cemetery in Berryville, Virginia. A memorial mass will be said on January 3, 2026 at 11:30am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Columbia, South Carolina, with a reception to follow.
