Suzanne "Sue" Mitchell, of Kent Island, Maryland formerly of Potomac, Maryland, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2011. Beloved wife of 56 years of Edward F. Mitchell; devoted mother of Karen Mitchell (Potomac) and Brian Mitchell (Kent Island); the proud grandmother of Stephanie and Caroline Holland (both of Washington, DC); and loving aunt of four nieces and nephews and their families in Virginia and California.
Sue was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, and adopted the Washington Metro Area as her home. In 1955 she graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Sue had a passion for teaching and taught for many years in Charlottesville and Vienna, Virginia.
Sue was a true partner to her husband during his 40-year career at Pepco, as well as active in local charity work. She also was a great sailor and was first-mate on many voyages up and down the east coast. Ever the competitor, she also was a 9-hole golf tournament champion. She was passionate about global travel and exploring new places. In 1996 Sue and Ed moved to their dream home on the Chesapeake Bay.
Sue will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Family will receive friends on Sunday, October 30, 2011 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Joseph Gawler's Sons Funeral Home, 5130 Wisconsin Avenue NW (corner of Harrison Street NW), Washington, DC. The family invites friends to attend a memorial service there at 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her honor to the National Rehabilitation Hospital, 102 Irving St. NW, Washington, DC 20010.
