On August 9, 2010 "Ted" Stevens, former United States Senator from Alaska died in a plane crash. He was born November 18, 1923, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the third of four children, by Gertrude S. and George A. Stevens. After graduating from high school in 1942, Ted served in the Army Air Forces during World War II and was honorably discharged March 1946. After the war, Stevens received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and a law degree at Harvard Law School. He became United States Senator from Alaska, serving from December 24, 1968, until January 3, 2009. He was, to date, the longest-serving Republican senator in history. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Cherrington Stevens. He was the beloved husband of Catherine Ann Stevens; devoted father of Ben Stevens, Susan Stevens Covich, Beth Stevens, Walter Stevens, Ted Stevens, Jr. and Lily Stevens Becker. He was also survived by 11 grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to call at JOSEPH GAWLER'S SONS, INC., 5130 Wisconsin Avenue, NW (corner of Harrison Street) Washington, DC on Sunday, September 26, 2010 and Monday, September 27, 2010 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington VA on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in his name to the North to the Future Foundation, 701 W. Eighth Ave., Suite 700, Anchorage, AK 99501.
