He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati, and his Medical Degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis MO.
He was a staff fellow at the National Institutes of Health, and a Director of Surgery at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Dr. Wiesmann served as the Director for Combat Casualty Care at the US Army Medical Research and Materiel
Command Post, at Ft. Detrick, where he led the design and development teams that produced novel technologies for improved battlefield survival. Dr. Wiesmann has directed major research programs for DARPA, NASA, and the Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, and has successfully led or assisted in taking six lifesaving medical products with a focus on saving the lives of soldiers through FDA approval to market.
In 2008, he received an honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Cincinnati.
He loved travel, fine wine, and dining. He was an avid amateur photographer.
Dr. Wiesmann is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sandra; sister Carol Jane Scott (Timothy); brother Robert Stacy Wiesmann (Barbara); and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are handled by Joseph Gawler's Sons. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the William P. and Sandra S. Wiesmann scholarship fund at the University of Cincinnati.
A memorial gathering will be held in the coming months.
