Died at home in Washington, DC on December 16, 2017.
Born 1934 in Warsaw, Poland, to a prominent Polish-Lithuanian family that was one of Poland’s largest landowners. When Poland was invaded in 1939, he and his parents, Count Franciszek Puslowski and Countess Irene Mohl, managed to escape the country, finally reaching the United States as penniless immigrants. All properties were lost in post-war Communist Poland.
Xavier worked his way through secondary school and college with a series of odd jobs. After graduating from Georgetown University and serving in the US Army, he worked for the Federal Government as an economist, mostly at the Department of Energy.
Once retired, he devoted himself to research, publishing articles and books: The Nobility of Poland, which, despite its title, covers various strata of society, particularly minorities, in Poland up to the eve of WWII; and Franz Liszt, his Circle, and his elusive Polish Oratorio. In 2015 he was awarded an Order of Merit medal by the Polish government for contributions to the cultural heritage of Poland.
He is survived by his wife and collaborator, Dr. Maria Brau, and two sons, Xavier Stephen Puslowski and Marc Albert Puslowski.
The family is planning a private memorial service.
