Leo P. LaPointe, 92, of Winslow, passed away on May 17, 2016 at his home with his wife Lucille and sons John and Stan by his side. He was born in Fairfield, ME on July 31, 1923, the son of Alphonse LaPointe and Roseana Poulin LaPointe. He attended Winslow High School and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served as a Radio Operator until his discharge in 1945. He married Lucille Deschaine in 1947.
Leo will be remembered by so many as the proprietor of Leo’s Cash Market in Winslow. He loved his store, but more so the many customers and friends he made there. Leo was an avid sports fan, but his greatest love was his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Following sports was Leo’s true passion. He was a lifelong fan of the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers and the LA Lakers. He was an even bigger fan of the Winslow Black Raiders, following all of John, Stan and Josh’s football, basketball and baseball games as well and “Jessie” and “Manda’s” basketball games. While John and Stan attended William Penn and the University of Maine, Leo followed their college football careers around the country as well.
After retiring from Leo’s Market, Leo became a regular at The Pointe Afta, where he continued his passion for sports and his camaraderie with all of his friends, old and new.
Leo is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucille, son John of New Florence, PA, and Stan and his wife Celeste of Winslow; three grandchildren Jessica Poulin and her husband Jared of Winslow, Joshua LaPointe of Quincy, MA, and Amanda LaPointe of Garfield, NJ; two great grandchildren Jace and Joslyn of Winslow; brother Reginald LaPointe of Auburn, ME, and sister Marie Ahearn of Winslow; eight nephews and three nieces. He was predeceased by his parents Alphonse and Roseana, brothers Thomas LaPointe, Albert LaPointe and Emile LaPointe, and sisters Rose LaPointe, Blanche Moen and Dorathy LaPlante.
The family would like to thank Dr. Roland Knausenberger, Inland Hospital, the hospice team, Katie Crawford, Jessie, Mariah, Terry, Amanda, the people at Togus, VA Dave Holden, Elizabeth Tulip, Deb O’Neil and Jeff Murch, and Hospice volunteer, Colby College student Nick Paterson.
