He was raised on Spruce Creek, by Bland Massie Hughes and Mary McGann Hughes, and married Shirley Ramsey Hughes in 1955.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary and Bland; sister, Bonnie Hughes Croushorn and her husband, Carl Croushorn; and sister-in-law, Doris Hughes.
Mitchell proudly served in the US Army, in Germany, from the years of 1956 to 1958 and came home to then work 35 years at Wayn-Tex, until he retired. He and Shirley together raised three kids, Tony, Kathy and Tammy. He loved bluegrass music and was known for attending local bluegrass shows. He had the uncanny ability to speak his own language of southern euphemisms and metaphors, and to tell many stories, which were enjoyed by all who had the opportunity to listen. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing whenever he could. All those he knew have been blessed to share in his long, full life and he will be greatly missed.
Mitchell is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; son, Tony Hughes and wife, Melissa Hughes; daughters, Kathy Dill Williams and husband, Chris Williams, and Tammy Hughes Mundy and husband, Ricky Mundy; as well as his brother, Gordon Massie Hughes. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Heather Heath, Kyle Dill, Katelyn Dill, Tyler Mundy, and Abby Mundy; four great grandchildren, Kaleb, Brody, Luke, and Hailey; and three great great grandchildren, Zoe, Marley and Waylon.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St., Waynesboro.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at Riverview Cemetery, 420 Rosser Ave., Waynesboro with Chad Grondin officiating. All who plan to attend the service are asked to meet directly at the cemetery.
