Charlsie Mae Barker

Charlsie was born Christiansburg, VA, to Bernice and William Dowdy on April 14th, 1938. Charlsie was a faithful, lifelong homemaker and childcare provider who was absolutely devoted to her family. She enjoyed gardening her flowers and vegetables, canning and cooking, and spent her spare time in her Bible, faithfully studying God’s Word. She was a long-time member of Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Charlsie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, Robert Barker; two sons, David Barker and Terry Barker; a daughter, Melissa Gilson; three brothers, Phillip Dowdy, Kenneth Dowdy and Jerry Dowdy; two granddaughters, Gloria Heslep and Veronica Herold; and a great grandson, Darren Truslow.

Charlsie is survived by her son, Wm Neil Heslep (Anna); daughters, Teressa Joiner (Rob), Tammy Herold (David), Donna Joyner (Jessie Jr.) and Lisa League (Tom). In addition, she is survived by her “chosen” daughter, Linda Hahn; 14 grandchildren; 2 “chosen” grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, May 15th, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church with Pastor Paul LaPrevotte officiating. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 14th, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
