
Born August 24, 1926 in Durham, she was the daughter of Katherine Amrhein Booker and Dr. Lyle Steele Booker. In 1937 the family moved to Waynesboro, Virginia, Dr. Booker’s home, and Mrs. O’Hanlan graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1944. Mrs. O’Hanlan attended the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey, and was graduated from the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia, in 1949 with a B.S. degree in nursing. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Chi, honorary leadership society. Following post-graduate work in obstetrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, she established and supervised the obstetrical service at King’s Daughters’ Hospital, Staunton, Virginia, before her marriage in 1952 to Dr. Joseph Treacy O’Hanlan, who preceded her in death on November 11, 1994.
In 1970 Mrs. O’Hanlan earned a M.A. degree in education from the University of Virginia, and taught nursing- and medical-related courses for several years at Piedmont Community College. She was also active while raising her family in the Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary Board, St. John’s Parent Organization, American Red Cross Board, YMCA Board, Chapter X Board, and numerous other civic and educational groups. She was a member of the Colonel James Patton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In 1992, Dr. and Mrs. O’Hanlan moved to the Forest at Duke Retirement Community, where she was involved in various committee work until her death.
Surviving her are her five children: Joseph Treacy O’Hanlan, Junior (Barbara Elaine O’Hanlan), of Richmond, Virginia; Dr. Katherine Anne O’Hanlan (Leonie Walker), of Portola Valley, California; Thomas Booker O’Hanlan (Susan Dull O’Hanlan), of Liberty, South Carolina; Edward Vincent O’Hanlan (Chase Rogers), of Old Lyme, Connecticut; and Robert Michael O’Hanlan, of Falls Church, Virginia; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister, Katherine Booker Crawford, of Wilmington, Delaware. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Lyle Booker Faust, and a brother, James Franklin Booker, both of Wilmington, Delaware.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. O’Hanlan at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Waynesboro, Virginia, to be officiated by Fr. Rolo B. Castillo, at 2:00 PM on Friday,April 17, 2015. She will be interred at a private burial service beside Dr. O’Hanlan in the Booker family plot in Riverview Cemetery in Waynesboro.
