He was born in Wilmington, N.C. on September 1, 1945, a son of the late James Goodloe and Martha Marian (Price) Garwood.
Survivors include his wife, Donna B. Garwood; two brothers, David Garwood and wife, Frances, Mark Garwood and wife Mary; sister-in-law, Pat Agnew, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Nelson County High School in 1962, Jim went on to Randolph-Macon College where he pitched for the Yellow Jackets all four years in Ashland.
Jim obtained his bachelor’s degree in education from Randolph-Macon College in 1966 and a masters degree in education from the University of Virginia.
He taught high school social studies for over 30 years, the last 27 at Nelson County High School, where he coached hundreds of student athletes in baseball, softball and JV basketball, and one season helped lead the baseball team to the state championship game.
He was a member of Rodes United Methodist Church in Afton where he sang in the church choir and was a lay leader for a number of years.
Following a private family graveside service, a celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at Rodes United Methodist Church, 286 Avon Rd., Afton,Va. with Pastor Scott A. Robertson-Gouge officiating.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
