Mr. Finch was born on June 15, 1938 in McColl, SC and grew up in Laurinburg, NC. He was a graduate of East Carolina University and later received his Master’s Degree from N.C. State University. John began his teaching career for the Raleigh City Schools, where he taught for one year before joining the staff of N.C. State, where he taught for eight years. Mr. Finch later joined the Virginia Community College System where he taught for 29 years. John loved teaching and molding the students he taught. He taught Bible classes for more than 40 years. Mr. Finch enjoyed many hobbies, including wood working, ceramics, growing orchids, gardening, making fishing lures, and spending time with his family at the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife Mary Edmonds Finch; two sons, Dr. John Mark Finch (Jackie) of Fishersville, VA, Jonathan Finch (Rosa) of Dodge City, KS; four grandchildren, Carla Sandy (Corey), Paul Finch, David Finch, Kristie Finch; and a brother, James G. Finch of Huntersville, NC.
A memorial service will be held at the Lighthouse Baptist Church at 12 noon on Thursday July 8, 2021 with Pastor Donnie Edmonds and Mitch Ball officiating. Burial will follow at the Augusta Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 11 AM until 12 Noon prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests all memorial contributions be made to the Lighthouse Baptist Church, 521 James Avenue, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
