I was there in April 2011 and the first rider that year. The weather was awful. She was very chatty but frail. She told me some wonderful stories. Sad to hear of her passing.

I was there in 1983 and had a wonderful time visiting with her. I even got to meet "Dad", her father, who wasn't doing too well.
Anyhow, I'm curious that even though she's gone, is her place still open to cyclists? If anybody knows, please contact me.

I'm just finding out about the Cookie Lady's passing as my annual Christmas card was returned.  I am truly saddened by this news.  My late husband and I along with our 3 year old son were fortunate to meet June and Grandpa Harold when we stopped for cookies and lemonade on our cross country bicycle trip in 1988.  We ended up staying several days and have kept in touch ever since.  We reconnected at the Cookie Lady reunion many years ago and had a wonderful visit.  June loved receiving photos of Kyle, loved watching him grow up from afar.  June was an extraordinary woman and will be missed greatly by us and SO many more people all over the world.  RIP dear lady.

Dear Curry family,

I leave a note now just as I did in a guest book I signed during my summer of '92 cross-country bicycle trip (entry signed then by Lisa and Oliver).  I had the distinct pleasure of staying on Afton Mountain and learning about June's enormous earring collection -- a collection few knew about. June was overjoyed by my interest and invited me into her home to see it first hand. The weather was poor but it cast a most beautiful and equally serene calm over the valley.

We only learned of June's passing today, and it looks like we are getting in just under the wire to sign this book.

We are among the 15,000 of June's closest friends, cyclists who have stayed in the bike house twice, and paid her visits 4 times over the last few years.   June was a national treasure, and we consider ourselves privileged to have had the opportunity to spend some time with her and hear her stories of the Afton of years gone by.   And the bike house.... oh my.  It is hallowed ground, the love and good wishes of thousands from around the world continuing to live within those walls.

The Cookie Lady will live forever within us.  You did well with your time on this earth, June.   Thank you.

My husband Jim (son of Henry Moyer , cousin) andI would visit her a few time a year since we moved here 5 years ago. Definetly not enough, but I truly enjoyed listening to the stories she would tell about our family, but I really loved the minature Afton Christmas she had made for her coffee table. We had even brought her a few items to add. 
She truly enjoyed showing off her photos and the Santa that stood in the corner of the living rm almost made you feel that someone else was in the room.
On our last visit this past Winter/Spring, it was warm enough to just sit outside on the balcony and enjoyed the scenery.

Each summer (of our childhood) we traveled from Texas to VA to stay with our Grandmother in Manassas then later, Waynesboro.  My sister and I looked forward to our annual visit with June. We have fond memories of seeing the Bike House and playing in the yard.  June sent us Christmas presents EVERY year and then sent Christmas presents to our children too!  Her smile, her love, and her joy were a blessing, and her generosity is truly an inspiration. The number of lives that she touched (while never really leaving Afton mountain) is something to consider...she undoubtedly brightened her corner of the world!

We'll miss you, June Curry! How fantastic that a small-town lady was virtually able to travel the world through her hosting of so many international travelers. June delighted in her friendships, saving every card she ever received and each scrap that the scruffy pedalers left to represent their overnight stays, making her house a sort of tribute to sweaty saddles---a cyclist folk art museum. Martin, our son Klaas, and I are happy to have been friends with such a kind spirit.

Judy,  I am so sorry to learn about your Mom's passing.  Even though I have not seen you and June for many years, I still think of you both fondly.  I remember June used to give you such nice birthday parties when you were a little girl.  Most of all I remember taking you to school on your first day.  We always loved that you called us one word, "ConnieRebaBetty".

It was always an adventure to visit Cousin June!!  From exploring the garage, bike house and property as a child to listening to her stories and visitng with she and Uncle Harold.  She was a blessing to many in her immediate family and to those in the biking community.

I'm one of the thousands of cyclists who visited the Cookie Lady's place in Afton. I was riding on a cross-USA journey with the Dukes family, and she made us all feel so welcome. She took a great picture of us too. That was in 1986. Ten years later, a reunion was held in her honor at the Acorn Inn in Nellysford, and I got to see her again then, and videotape parts of that event. It was a joy to see her surrounded by so many grateful cyclists. They, like me, will always remember her kindness. My deepest condolences to June's family and friends, and may God bless you all.

Cousin June grew up with my Dad and they were always close.It was fascinating to hear the stories she would tell about the postcards and letters she received from around the world.She was an extraordinary lady and will be missed.

Cousin June never traveled the world but the world came to her in many ways.. She started out as a Pin Pal to may friends in different Countries in return they would send her a pair of earrings from their country.. Thousands and Thousands of pairs she would show me from time to time and told me stories of each one.When she had to leave the working world to take care of her mother who was bed ridden. she reach out in many ways to be a TRUE FRIEND to strangers who soon became like a family member.. She has been one of my idols for years..She lived the American Dream of helping and being friends to all... Love,Prayers and Tears we will deeply miss you June.

We live at the bottom of Afton Mountain, June lived at the top.  We remember the many bikers going by to get to June's house at the top.  We have fine memories of visiting June and going next door to see all the photos of bikers who stopped for lodging, and the cookies. The pride and love in the eyes of June as she told the stories.  We remember the tears when she told us she could no longer furnish the cookies for different reasons.  Her gifts and love will be remembered around the world by those who had the honor to meet this fine Lady.

June was an adopted grandmother for my family. She was loved very much by many. She will be forever remembered and missed. Rest in peace, Grandma June.

I did not know Mrs. Curry but I volunteer at the Rockfish Gap Tourist Ctr and have heard about her through all the AT hikers and bikers. She will be missed by all those who she touched.  God Bless Her!

I remember the days back in the early 70's when June started giving out cookies and water to the bikers. I worked for her, Mr. Haven and their family mowing grass, cutting shrubs and anything else they needed. This has been a wonderful family to have graced Afton Mountain for so many years. She will be missed by many.

June was a wonderful woman and friend.She was a big influencein my young Christian life at Afton Chapel. I will always remeber her kind words and her sweet smile.She wasa good Sundayschool teacher and loved the Lord. I remember that she loved earings and had quite a collection. She will be greatly missed by all but I know I will see her again in Heaven one day.

We'll all miss June Curry here in Hindman, Kentucky.  Over the past 17 years we've referred cyclists to make sure they stop in and see the famous "Cookie Lady" when passing through Afton.  We'll miss the Cookie Lady stories from all the cyclists going from East to West and vice versa. June, you spent your life serving & caring for others---your daughter, as well as your parents & uncles after they were unable to care for themselves.  For many years, you provided hospitality (food & shelter) for bikers from all over the world.  What a blessing your life of service & sacrifice has been for so many people!

Our family always enjoyed our visits & correspondence with you for so many years.

We are confident that you are now at peace in God's presence.

I was blessed in May 2011 to meet June Curry, the famous Cookie Lady of Afton Mountain.  What a wonderful woman and a kindred spirit to thousand of cyclists.  June's generosity was appreciated by us all.  She will be sorely missed.  May her love and generosity serve as an example for all.

June it was a pleasure to grow-up in Afton and have you as a neighbor.  I will never forget you as my Sunday School Teacher at Afton Chapel.  You were a blessing to all of us then and it overflowed into our adult life.  You touched many bikers who  stopped by for a cool drink of water and a cookie. My heart is broken as I read the news about June's passing.  I was lucky enough to be one of thousands of bicyclists to have ridden to her quaint little house at the top of Afton Mountain and make June's acquaintance last summer.  She was delightfully charming, sweet, and full of great stories of cyclists from years past.  I treasure the memory of the afternoon I was able to spend with her.  

June, I hope you were able to take with you the outpouring of love from the cycling community, and wherever you are now I hope that they had cookies waiting for you when you arrived.  You will be missed...Thank you for everything.

June was a dear friend to me and all the people lucky enough to have known her. She touched our lives with her kindness, her stories, her love, and her humor.  She leaves behind sons and daughters all over the world.  She lived vicariously through the bike travels of those who struggled up Afton Mountain and beyond.  She was a true southern lady who could light up a room with her smile and sparkling, blue eyes.  I loved her and am so lucky to have called her "Mom".

June, you were a blessing to every life you touched.  You will be missed.  Afton Mountain will never be the same!
