

Born May 20, 1947 in Lexington, VA, he was a son of the late Gilbert Rice and Leona May (Sensabaugh) Balser.
Nelson was employed by the former Poly-Bond Inc. prior to his retirement. He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran who served his country honorably during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Tioga County. Deeply rooted in his faith, Nelson was a devoted member of Breakthrough Life Center in Waynesboro. In his younger years, Nelson loved riding motorcycles and took great interest in collecting knives and coins. As time went on, he found quiet joy in word books and crossword puzzles.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Lynn Balser; and a great-granddaughter, Carleigh Wisniewsky.
Survivors include his loving wife, Harriett Darlene Balser of Waynesboro; daughters, Carrie Lynn LaPointe of Sugarhill, GA and Amy Balser (John Pendleton) of Stuarts Draft, VA; son, Michael Shane Balser of Waynesboro; grandchildren, Kimberly Wisniewsky, Matthew LaPointe (Kayla), Tyler LaPointe, Brandon LaPointe, Courtney Deates, Johnny Balser (Lauren), Tristin Tomlin, Cody Lowman (Hayley Marshall), Serenity Lowman (Dylan Hoosier), Sidney Lowman, Lane Henderson, Rileigh Balser and Emma Balser; great-grandchildren, Haylee Wisniewsky, Scarlett Wisniewsky, Deliah Deates, Skyler Barko, Lynna Balser, and Lyza Balser; sisters, Connie Terry of Staunton, Ruth Breeden of Waynesboro, and Pam Dedrick of Stuarts Draft; brother, Roger Balser of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at Augusta Memorial Park, 1775 Goose Creek Road, Waynesboro with Pastor Bubba Creedle officiating. All who plan to attend are asked to meet directly at the cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be family members.
There will be no formal viewing or visitation at the funeral home.
