Ray Samuel Ponton

Ray Samuel Ponton, 79, of Crimora, passed away on Tuesday November 12, 2013 at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Mr. Ponton was born on May 28, 1934 in Augusta County and was a son of the late Emory and Lottie (Blackwell) Ponton. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson, Ray served in the United States Army. He worked as a Tie-end operator in weaving for Wayn-Tex for many years prior to his retirement. Ray enjoyed hunting and fishing and could always be found watching a local baseball game. He liked seeing and meeting new people and never met a stranger. Ray also liked eating out with friends and family and listening to bluegrass music. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many.
On November 9, 1956 he married the former Annie Bruce, who preceded him in death on September 26, 2005.
Mr. Ponton is survived by three sons, Timmy Ponton and wife Shelly of Crimora, Tom Ponton and wife Kim of Crimora, Troy Ponton of Crimora; a daughter, Tonia Harris and husband Kelvin of Waynesboro, Melissa Henkel, who he thought of as a daughter; close friend, Sheila Harris of Stuarts Draft; a brother, David Ponton of Maryland; three sisters, Ellen Howell of New Hope, Amy Hite of Stuarts Draft, Faye Campbell of Fayetteville, NC; two grandchildren, “His Sunshine” Jordan Harris, Donald Hagy; three great-grandchildren, Amber Miller, Virginia Miller, Knolan Sobzac; his beloved dog “Pee Wee”; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 16, 2013 at 2 PM at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes with Pastor Billy Coffey officiating. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6 until 8 pm at the funeral home.
Active pallbearers for the service will be his family.
