

He was born on October 16, 1913, in Waynesboro, son of the late Samuel M. and Mary D. Hupman.
Prior to his retirement in 1973, Mr. Hupman was Librarian of the U.S. Senate and a member of the Law Librarians Society of Washington, D.C. He served as chairman of the Waynesboro Public Library Board and later as President of Friends of the WPL. He was a member of the Beautification Commission and the Commission on the Elderly in Waynesboro. He was a member of the Bridgewater United Methodist Church and was active in the A.A.R.P., N.A.R.F.E., M.O.A.A., and the Tuesday Luncheon Group.
He was awarded the degree of Juris Doctor by the George Washington University School of Law and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in Army Intelligence and Security.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary; his second wife, Jean Moore Hupman; his brothers, Bill and Sam; and a sister, Catherine Jackman.
He is survived by his son, John R. Hupman and his wife, Betty Jane of Ocean City, MD; a grandson, John Marshall and his wife, Valery; and a great granddaughter, Madison, all of Odenton, MD.
Following a private family inurnment at Riverview Cemetery, a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, August 20, 2011, at the Bridgewater United Methodist Church, 219 North Main Street, with Reverend James Harris officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in Richard’s memory, to the National Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090, or the charity of your choice.
