Born on July 22, 1933, in Syracuse, NY, Robert was the fourth of seven children to Otto H. and Muriel E. (Ackerson) Herrmann. He graduated from North Syracuse High School and later married Alice M. Crain of Clay, NY.
Robert served in the United States Navy in Key West, FL until his honorable discharge in 1954. His public service continued through a long and respected career with the Federal Government, including his role as Director of Security at the Peace Corps in Washington, DC. After retirement, he continued to serve as a trusted consultant on personnel security matters.
A devoted golfer, Robert found joy and connection on the fairways, playing courses near and far and forming many lasting friendships along the way. He lived life with determination and an adventurous spirit—proudly completing two tandem skydives in his 90s. He was also an active member of a long-standing recovery fellowship, where for nearly 50 years Robert mentored others and shared his experience, strength, and hope.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Katherine “Kitty” (Gallagher) Herrmann of Waynesboro; his son Andrew R. Herrmann; sisters Jean Stevenson, Jane Herrmann, and Joan Amerman; and his brother Douglas Herrmann.
He is survived by Alice M. Schipf, his first wife and mother of his children: Peggy A. Fetner, Linda H. DeHart, and Nancy J. Herrmann; his sisters Barbara J. Herrmann and Patricia L. Boylan; grandchildren Dustin A. DeHart and Jesse J. Sharp; stepdaughter Jill Unferth and stepson Robert “Asher” Gray Gallagher; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery in Waynesboro, VA. A memorial service will follow; details to be shared with family and friends once confirmed.
There will be no public viewing or visitation at the funeral home.
