

He was born on September 1, 1919 in Montebello, a son of the late Willie A. and Hattie Bradley Smith.
He served in the U. S. Army Infantry Division from 1941-1945, retired as maintenance mechanic from the former General Electric of Waynesboro, and was a member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church in Montebello.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela S. Sumner, three sisters, and four brothers.
Survivors include his wife of over 64 years, Virginia Tinsley Smith; a daughter, Dr. Sandra S. Clemmer (Richard) of Roanoke; a brother, Fredrick Smith (Ann) of Crimora; a sister, Susan Ethna Reddick (Joe) of New York; three grandchildren, Dr. James Sumner (Sarah) of Silver Spring, Maryland, Stacey S. Craig (Floyd) of Junction City, Kansas, Jennifer C. Jamison (Troy) of Roanoke; four great-grandchildren, Ethan Sumner, Eliza Sumner, Libby Jamison and Davis Jamison.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, August 17, 2011, at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 West Main Street, with Pastors Steve Parker and John Sullivan officiating.
Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery, with military rites provided by the American Legion Post 340.
Active pallbearers will be Leo Wheeler, George Snider, Earl Desper, Charlie Oliver, Brian Harris, Wilmer Roadcap, Donald Bradley and Stonnell Bradley.
Honorary pallbearers will be Rodney Magee, Warren Bradley, Christopher Smith, Jimmy Smith, and Jimmy Sumner.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at the funeral home.
