

Gladys Acklin Martin,100, of Craynes Run Road, Waynesburg (near Ruff Creek) passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2017 in Waynesburg Healthcare and Rehabilitation. She was born August 11, 1917 to George Clarence Acklin and Fannie Maude Loughman Acklin. Gladys was a direct descendant of Silas Crayne, a Greene County Revolutionary War Veteran. She lived on Craynes Run Road her entire life. She was the youngest of six children.
On Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1936, in her family home, she married the love of her life, John Ira Martin, who passed away September 25, 1999. On Thanksgiving Day in 1986, fifty years after their first wedding, they renewed their vows, getting married the second time by the same minister, Rev. John C. Meyers. They enjoyed a total of 62 loving years of marriage.
Gladys was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lippencott where she faithfully served as a Deaconess, Church Clerk, 1st President of their Ladies Missionary Society, a Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Teacher, and sang in the choir.
Gladys enjoyed going to the Waynesburg Senior Center where she loved to quilt and where she made many friends.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Shirley Martin Brown Rager, wife of the late Daniel Rager and Connie Martin Grimes, wife of Ernie Grimes, all of Waynesburg. Former daughter-in-law, Rena Martin-Wehner of Ohio. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Brian Martin and wife, Patti; Joel Martin and wife, Jennifer all of Ohio; Nicole Brown McGrady and husband, Ron of Washington; C.J. Grimes and wife Jeannie of Waynesburg; and Jennifer Grimes Withrow and husband, Jason of Waynesburg. Ten great-grandchildren: Adam Smithley, Heather Martin, Brianne Bergstrom, Alex Martin, and Rebecca Wise, all of Ohio; Brittni McGrady Petros of Washington; Larkyn and Harper Grimes & Joey and Jaira Withrow of Waynesburg; three great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased in addition to her husband and parents are two sons, John James Martin who died in infancy and Thomas Howard Martin who died in 1996. Also deceased are her five siblings; Frank Acklin, Rev. Silas Acklin, Bill Acklin, Flossie Adamson, and Kathryn Ross, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 1, 2017 in Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 W. High St., Waynesburg where services will be held at 11: 00 a.m. Monday, October 2, 2017 with Rev. Nick Bardo officiating, followed by interment in Bethlehem Cemetery at Ruff Creek.
