Mary Ellen Inghram

Greene County roots have grown wide and deep in the life of Mary Ellen Inghram. Born on September 22, 1936 in Waynesburg, she was the beloved daughter of Arthur K. Inghram and Arveda Kerns Inghram. As an only child, she was a close family member to her Uncle Harry and Aunt Ruth Kerns Inghram. Genealogy traces early Inghram ancestry to their arrival on Wm. Penn’s ship the Welcome in 1682, located first in Chester, Pa. then Frederick, Md., and finally by 1750’s they settled in Franklin and Whiteley Twps. in SW Pa. The family tree found new soil in which to grow.

Mary Ellen spent her childhood days attending Waynesburg schools and graduating high school in 1955. She attended her 70th class reunion, sharing memories of hot rods, favorite 50’s tunes, and tales of school antics and times waitressing at the Waynesburg Restaurant. She made it sound like the best of “Happy Days.” Her fascination with speedy wheels, R&R jazz, and dancing into the night never ended. Her red cardinal decorations filled every nook in her home.

On May 12, 1956 she married Charles E. Hunnell, Sr., her high school beau. Mary Ellen’s family tree branched to include nine children: Tracey (Alan) McDade, Texas; Kenneth (Christine), Indiana; Tammy Hunnell, Ohio; Toni Snyder, Maine; Steve (Rita), Indiana; William Patrick (Arlinda), Ohio; and Tanya Janie (AJ) Zimmerman, Florida. The next generations include thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and twenty-five great-great grandchildren. Two of her children are deceased: Marcia Moore and Charles Hunnell, Jr. Surviving in addition to her children are two special first cousins: Brenda “Sis” Inghram Roach , Waynesburg, and John “John Robert” Inghram of Washington. These three characters shared seven decades of sibling love and adventures. Later in life Mary Ellen married David Dulaney(deceased in 2018), her best friend, who not only adored her but also deeply loved and cared for her children.

Employment required moving several times, residing in seven states. The companies Baroid Drilling and ABC Industries were located in Waynesburg, Charleston, WV, and Warsaw, Indiana. Eunice, Louisiana, the heart of Cajun country, holds the fondest memories. Mary Ellen quickly acquired the art of Creole cooking, perfecting jambalaya, gumbo, and her personal favorite dish Shrimp Creole. When she eventually returned to Greene County, friends and family feasted at her Southern table.

Near the end of her life, Mary Ellen lived in Campbell Apts. and then Hawthorne Woods in Washington. She celebrated her 2025 Christmas Day dinner with friends and family, a final spin in a silver Mustang 5.0 convertible, a sip of wine, and a few bites of Gulf shrimp! She quietly passed on January 6, 2026. Whenever a red cardinal lands in your backyard, please remember that Mary Ellen is stopping by to say hello.
