Marvin “Marv” James Williams, Jr. passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at the age of 78. He was the son of the late Jeanette Williams. Survivors include his children Craig (Kim) Williams and Mandee (William) Forehand, and his sister Jeanette. He is preceded in death by his wife Amy Williams and his sister Maureen.
A native of Menominee, Michigan, Marv joined the U.S. Army while in high school and served with honor for 20 years. He served as a Combat Medic in Vietnam where he received the Meritorious Service Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal, and as a Medical Specialist in Germany. Marv continued his military service as a Clinical Specialist, and then completed the NCO Professional Development Course, which furthered his military career in organizational effectiveness and leadership development. Marv then leveraged his military leadership skills and education into a successful civilian career in operational management. Marv’s second “retirement” led him to the Oconee County Sherrif’s Office where he served as a First Responder, a 911 dispatcher, and a Deputy Sherrif. In 1998, he was awarded the Acts of Heroism Award by Governor Zell Miller.
In 1965, Marv met Amy Green on a blind date set up by a mutual friend, a date that never would have happened had Marv’s original date not become ill. The day after their first date, Marv told the mutual friend that Amy was the girl he would marry. It only took three years and three proposals. During their 55-year marriage, they had two children; lived throughout the United States; rode “poker runs” on Marv’s Goldwing motorcycle; cruised to the Caribbean several times; and supported their family and friends any way they could.
Marv loved music, British procedurals, board games, and a good Bourbon and coke. His dry humor charmed nearly everyone he met. He was generous and kind, and had a knack for always getting the best parking space and buying duplicates of tools he never used.
A Committal Service will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at 1:30 pm at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, Georgia 30114.
