Born on August 3, 1954, in Weslaco to Bernardina and Cesario "Charro" Cantu, Maria was a proud daughter of the Rio Grande Valley. She carried a deep love for her roots, her family, and the land that shaped her. She lived a rich and adventurous life, filled with love, laughter, and courage.
Maria was a loving wife, devoted mother, and the heart of her home. She shared a beautiful life with her husband, Guadalupe Luis Contreras, and together they raised five children, each of whom was a source of immense pride and joy. She was more than a mother to her own children — she was a mother to everyone who needed one. Her home was always open, her advice always honest, and her love always unconditional.
Maria’s zest for life was unmatched. In her younger days, she was a hunter, a fisherman, a 4-wheeler enthusiast, and an adventurer at heart. She had a fearless spirit and a passion for the outdoors that she shared freely with those around her. Whether it was exploring the backroads or enjoying a day by the water, Maria was always up for a new experience.
She was also a passionate lover of horror movies, animals, and music — especially the kind that made you feel something. Her sense of humor, sharp wit, and fierce loyalty left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Maria is survived by her loving husband, Guadalupe; her children, Nabor Contreras, Iris E. Contreras, and Guadalupe L. Contreras Jr.; and a large extended family and circle of friends who will miss her deeply.
She is preceded in death by her beloved children Alma D. Contreras and Michael Contreras; her parents Bernardina and Cesario “Charro” Cantu; and her sister Elva Carrillo.
Though our hearts are broken, we find peace in knowing Maria has been reunited with those she so dearly missed. Her legacy of love, strength, and spirited living will forever echo in the lives she touched.
