Maria was born on October 30, 1936, in Wharton, Texas, to Nieves and Jose Hernandez. She was a devoted daughter, mother, and grandmother who lived a life full of love, resilience, and faith.
She is survived by her five children: Susan Rubio Rivera, Olga Parrish, Teresa Villarreal, Alicia Trevino, and Martin Hernandez. She is preceded in death by her beloved eldest daughter, Carmen, who now welcomes her into heaven.
Maria, lovingly known as Mere, was a woman of incredible strength and determination. She raised her children while working as a migrant worker and later as a meat packer until her well-earned retirement. A woman of deep Catholic faith, she embraced and lived by the values of respect, dignity through hard work, and unconditional love for family—principles she proudly passed down to her children and generations to follow.
She had the voice of an angel and found great joy in singing, whether in the church choir or alongside her siblings. Maria also shared a special bond with her cherished dogs—Paul, Junior, La Gorda, Bomba, Winnie, and even Bella, who kept her on her toes with her playful spirit. Her pets were among her most loyal companions throughout her life.
Maria’s greatest treasures were her family: six children, thirteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and nineteen great-great-grandchildren. Her legacy of love, kindness, and strength will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and eternally loved.
