Gilbert Altamirano, 77, of Los Angeles, California, passed away on March 22, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones at home. He was born on March 30, 1948, in Los Angeles, California to Jesus and Helen Altamirano. He resided in the state of Washington for a few years with his wife and children, but spent most of his life in California.
Gilbert held many professions including over 20 years travelling around the country as a coach bus driver, machinist, carpenter, chef, and baker. He had a passion for music, performing as a mariachi, and singing and playing the guitar for family and friends. He enjoyed pottery, gardening, and cooking delicious food. Gilbert loved dressing in style, in meticulously pressed clothes, when spending time with family and friends and was always the life of the party.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years - Amalia Ruby Altamirano, children - Carlos Antonio Sanchez, Gilbert Jesus Altamirano, and Monica Ruby Altamirano, grandchildren - Sylvia Christine Zuniga, Michael Carlos Sanchez, Gabriel Anthony Sanchez, Jonathan Isaiah Sanchez, Jacob Nathan Sanchez, Samuel Adam Sanchez, Rebecca Tiffany Monroy-Martinez, Gilbert Altamirano, Darlene Ruby Altamirano, Carlos Yandel Altamirano, Leilani Monique Altamirano, Andrea Belle Silvestre, and Krystina Marie Saldate, three great-grandchildren – Arabella Faith Sanchez, Benjamin Michael Sanchez, and Henry William Martinez, and siblings – Stella Martinez and Irene Teran. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Denise Alyna Saldate and parents Jesus and Helen Altamirano.
Gilbert is deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him as an extremist who loved hard. He was a dedicated caregiver who always made time to help those in need, especially those he loved. If the means to help were not readily available, Gilbert would find a way. He remains a pillar of strength who battled his illness with the same fierceness he demonstrated throughout his life up until the very end.
Gilbert loved his wife, Ruby, unconditionally, adored his children, and lived for his grandchildren. Several stories from family and friends have been shared noting how his support changed their lives for the better. He lives on with a legacy of exemplary strength and great love.
A memorial service and viewing will be held on April 24, 2026, at Funeraria del Angel located at 2333 W. Merced Ave in the city of West Covina, 91790 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., including a Rosary service at 6:00 p.m., followed by a Liturgy service on the morning of April 25, 2026, at 9:30 a.m., also at Funeraria del Angel. Immediately following the Liturgy service, he will be laid to rest at Oakdale Memorial Park located at 1401 S. Grand Ave. in the city of Glendora, 91740 at 11:00 a.m.
