Christopher Daniel Salgado

Christopher Salgado, age 57, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Iowa Methodist Hospital surrounded by loving family. In what became his final days he was skillfully cared for by the staff at Iowa Methodist Hospital. The family is especially grateful for the kindness and gentle care of the 7th floor Younkers nurses and physicians.

A quiet person who performed thoughtful deeds without a lot of fanfare, Christopher performed one last generous deed by becoming an organ donor. His family is pleased to share that his donation will be used for transplants and/or critical research.

While we believe Christopher is celebrating Mother's Day in heaven this weekend with the mother he loved so much (Mary Jayne Salgado), he has a very large extended family and many friends left behind to miss him. His family tree is very large and has many branches of support, and it would be difficult to name all those who loved him.

He was surrounded in his final days with much love and support from his more immediate family including:

Cousins - Tony (Eileen) Valdez, Vicki (Tom) Hallman, Julie (Kelly) McCarty, Margo (Mike) O’Meara, Melissa (Steve) Breman, Michael DeVore, Michelle (David) Brainard, Kim (Greg) Fisher, Brian (Diane) Conaway, Mark Conaway, Paula (Ward) Nelson, Shannon (Kevin) Golwitzer, Jayne Ann (Steve) Underhill-Flickinger.

He is also missed by his cat Skylar, who would hide from everyone but Chris.

Even as a child, Chris loved animals, nature and being outside. He explored for hours near the creek at the house on Lovington Drive. It was no surprise that being a landscaper was his favorite job.

Roller skating was also a big part of Christopher’s childhood. It was a family activity. His Mom was one of the “rink Moms,” patiently watching, as he and Laura took lessons or skated at an open session with their friends. He was particularly good at speed skating, but then that was Chris-always wanting to go faster, faster, faster.

He was an avid and LOYAL sports fan and had favorite teams in many sports; Notre Dame, Iowa State, and the Minnesota Vikings. Baseball was probably his favorite sports. As just a little guy, he started playing baseball at Highland Park Little League, and as an adult, he was a KC Royals fan. He was a serious baseball fan and for many years enjoyed his annual trips to the College World Series in Omaha. Watching boxing great Oscar De La Hoya was another favorite pastime, and he traveled many times to see him box in person.

Yes, he WAS special, and he is already missed by many.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm with a Rosary to begin at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 14 at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel & Mortuary. Memorial Mass will be at 11:30 am on Wednesday, May 15 at Sacred Heart with a light luncheon to follow in the Parish Center.

Christopher really wasn’t a flower person. In lieu of flowers, the family is collecting donations for a memorial fund to be distributed at a later date.
