Dorothy Burke, 90, passed away Monday, December 12, 2016 at The Village at Legacy Pointe. A memorial service will be held at The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 10 a.m.
Dorothy was born February 8, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Bruce and Minnie MacIntosh. She attended Franklin High School in Brooklyn. She met Ernest Burke during World War 11 and they were married May 31, 1947. Ernest and Dorothy lived in Muscatine, Iowa before moving to West Des Moines in 1967.
She received a Bachelor’s degree from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa and a Master’s degree from Drake University. Dorothy taught elementary school in Muscatine and West Des Moines for over 33 years.
Dorothy enjoyed playing bridge, doing needlework, traveling and participating in church activities. She was a member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, a member of P.E.O., and a lifetime member of the National Education Association.
She is survived by her sons, Roger (Susan) of Manhattan Beach, California and Kevin (Nadine) of West Des Moines; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; close family friends, Francis Forret and Steve Nicoson; and many good friends at the Village at Legacy Pointe. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest; her brother, Bruce; and her sister, Evelyn.
Dorothy requested that family and friends make donations to their favorite charity, cancer society or St. Jude, in lieu of flowers.
