children born to Ruth M. McNerney and Joseph R. McNerney of West Des Moines, Iowa. Ed graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 1982 and went on to receive a BFA in Jewelry from the University of Iowa. He was a lifelong lover and collector of art with a keen eye for interesting visual pieces. His artistic talent was not limited to jewelry making; after graduation his art interests expanded into ceramics and painting using many mediums and surfaces to express his concept and vision.
Ed lived his life on his own terms, pursuing curiosities as they crossed his path. He was incredibly knowledgeable about construction, concrete, landscaping, auto mechanics, welding, art and metal installation, chemistry, literature, poetry, antiques, music, collector of the strange, wonderful, practical, and much more. Suffice to say if one could not figure out how to do something either in the realm of the arts, fixable or buildable material, we would call Ed.
Ed collected friends and associates like pollen on the legs of a bee. His friends are found across the country and span from a couple years to his entire life. Ed was an unintentionally charismatic guy. If he loved you, he never un-loved you. Intimates of Ed, both family of friends understood he had a grace filled disposition, always willing to lend a hand no matter how tough the situation may be.
Ed is survived by his mother, Ruth McNerney; nine siblings, Mary Byrd, Joseph P. (Jane) McNerney, David McNerney, Robert (Denise) McNerney, Beth (Brad)Thayer, Daniel (Lisa) McNerney, Sarah McNerney, Bridget McNerney, Angela (Mike Magner) McNerney; cousin, Matt McNerney as well as many nieces, nephews, great and great-great, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Joseph R. McNerney; brother, Richard McNerney; nephew, Timothy McNerney; brothers- in- law. Jack Byrd, Mike Curran; and sister-in-law, Judy Ritchey McNerney.
A public Memorial Service will be held at 2pm, Sunday, August 4th at Walnut Woods State Park Lodge. We will celebrate in a natural setting as we celebrate Ed’s abundant life through food, music and stories.
